The Background Story
Kean University’s history in higher education spans over 150 years. It is the third largest public university in New Jersey, and the largest producer of teachers in the state. Kean University is a public cosmopolitan university serving undergraduate and graduate students in the liberal arts, the sciences, and the professions.
EFK and Kean University have had an established working relationship for over 18 years.
EFK did a comprehensive rebrand of Kean University, including responsive website development, UI design, UX design, video, content development, and a responsive experience. We created a campaign to showcase Kean’s rising athletic department, a video for their admissions department, and an interactive game platform to help freshman acclimate to the campus and schools.
A New Look
We created brand architecture that offers an easy color-coded system for each division of the school. This campaign provides slice of life images showcasing students in their environment. All print materials, internal and external communications, emails, fonts, stationaries, and signage were updated to reflect and match this campaign.

Kean University provides a world-class educational curriculum to 13,000 New Jersey students, but their marketing presence didn’t always receive a passing grade. The university wanted to create a new image for itself and tapped EFK for help. Our solution successfully established Kean’s image as a dynamic metropolitan teaching university with an exceptional academic program. Kean was so pleased with our efforts they continued to request our guidance on website development, inter-departmental collaboration, gala events, and of course overall branding strategies. In addition to creating Kean’s unique new image, our TV spot won a Telly award for best commercial!
Kean Xpedition is an innovative app created by EFK to give incoming freshman an interactive orientation experience unlike any other. By playing the games on the Kean Xpedition app, students are also entered to win prizes like gift cards and iPads. Games include a Jeopardy-style trivia game, a scavenger hunt, and Cougar Trail, among others. Kean Xpedition is a step above most orientation programs, involving the students and making learning about Kean more fun.
As part of Kean Xpedition, we developed an engaging series of mini-games that included Cougar Trail, a two week treasure hunt. Hints were posted on the Xpedition website and prizes were redeemed through Twitter.
EFK also created a sub-brand marketing campaign for Kean University’s Athletic Department. This campaign highlighted Kean’s new coaches and featured images of them on the field.
